Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs) assist in the distribution of Holy Communion at weekday and weekend Masses. Becoming an EMHC enables a person to live their Baptismal call to service. This ministry requires that a person is prayerful, reverent, has a special devotion to the Eucharist, and demonstrates a commitment to continued spiritual growth.

People become ministers through recommendation of the Pastor, and after completing Diocesan and parish training. EMHCs will then receive a mandate from the Diocese of Orlando which lasts two years. Within the two year period, the minister must maintain a current mandate by participating in a “morning of reflection.”

The distribution of Holy Communion requires a person to be a model of Christ’s faithful. Specifically this means that a person lives in a state of grace, and is fully initiated into the Church (Baptism, Confirmation, & Eucharist), and if married, ensure the marriage is a valid marriage through the Catholic Church.

EMHCs who wish to serve at Basilica School Masses are required by the Diocese of Orlando to complete “Safe Environment Training” and fingerprinting. For information on Safe Environment Training and Fingerprinting, click here.
